Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) - The most famous Japanese painter in the world -
An ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. Born in what is now Sumida Ward, Tokyo, he loved art from an early age and taught himself woodblock engraving and other art-related techniques. He produced over 30,000 works in his lifetime.
Hokusai is one of Japan's most representative ukiyo-e artists, and the only Japanese person to be selected by the American magazine LIFE as one of the 100 people who have made the greatest contributions to the world over the past 1,000 years.
